Risk Assessment - Information update about the contamination of polyurethane foams by TDI from BASF - October 17, 2017

As reference value for this risk assessment, BASF uses the official German OEL (occupational exposure limit) of 1 ppm for 1,4-DCB. All measurements conducted on foam samples suspected to be contaminated revealed DCB values below this limit.

Even considering that freshly produced foam may reach the limit value of 1 ppm, the values measured in tests with contaminated foam quickly drop below this limit – according to the information sent out by BASF – within the timeframes indicated below:

  • On day 2 after the foaming process, the 1,4-DCB value of the PU foam has dropped to 2% of the limit value.
  • On day 3 after the foaming process, the 1,4-DCB value of the PU foam has dropped to 1% of the limit value.
  • At least seven days pass between the production of a foam batch and the day we send out the Cellofoam products based on this batch.

We hope that this update will support you in your own risk assessment regarding processing and use of the products that you have in stock. If you have any further questions, please ask your contact person in our sales back office or our order processing department or send an e-mail to sales@cellofoam.de
